Willy Jay Named Appellate Lawyer of the Year by Benchmark Litigation

Benchmark Litigation has named Goodwin partner Willy Jay the 2020 Appellate Lawyer of the Year. The announcement was made at the Benchmark Litigation US Awards East ceremony in New York on February 27th.

Jay is the head of litigation in Goodwin's Washington D.C. office and co-chair of the firm’s Appellate Litigation Practice. He has argued 17 cases before the United States Supreme Court and handled cases in every U.S. Court of Appeals. His Supreme Court victories have included some of the country’s most significant intellectual property matters involving patent, copyright, and trademark law. In 2019, Jay achieved a landmark U.S. Supreme Court patent victory in Helsinn Healthcare S.A. v. Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc. His appellate work also focuses on financial services, administrative law (especially FDA litigation), class action practice, ERISA and securities.

Before joining Goodwin, Jay served for five years as Assistant to the Solicitor General at the U.S. Department of Justice. In that capacity, he handled Supreme Court and appellate matters for a wide variety of federal agencies, including every Cabinet Department and numerous executive and independent agencies.

Jay has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including from LMG Life Sciences, Law360, Legal 500 United States, Managing IP, American Lawyer and Chambers USA.
