The National Law Journal Names Brett Schuman a Cannabis Law Trailblazer

The National Law Journal announced that Brett Schuman has been selected as a 2020 Cannabis Law Trailblazer. The third edition of the Cannabis Law Trailblazers profiles the most influential lawyers in the rapidly expanding sector.

The National Law Journal highlighted Schuman’s ongoing representation of leading edibles company Kiva Brands in what is considered one of the first federal trademark infringement cases involving cannabis-based products. The publication also noted his representation of Raw Garden on trademark infringement matters, and his success as lead counsel for electronic vaporizer company PAX Labs in multidistrict litigation across the country.

A partner in the firm’s IP Litigation group and chair of the San Francisco office, Schuman is the founder and co-head of Goodwin’s Cannabis practice. He advises businesses on investment opportunities in the cannabis market and counsels cannabis industry clients regarding the federal and state regulatory regimes relating to cannabis, IP issues, products liability and a variety of litigation matters. His clients range from Fortune 50 companies to emerging companies to leading cannabis industry operators such as PAX Labs, Kiva Brands, Gotham Green, Cann, Grassdoor, Sunderstorm, and Intrexon.

Schuman has been repeatedly recognized for excellence by IAM Patent 1000 and this year Goodwin was named a Top Firm for Cannabis Law by Business Insider. A prolific writer and market commentator, Schuman recently co-authored an article in the Cannabis Industry Journal titled “Cannabis Contracting: The Potential Invalidity Defense Created by Federal Prohibition,” and in April co-authored a Law360 article titled “Will COVID-19 Transform the Cannabis Industry?”
